How to Find Recently Released Bernalillo County Inmates
Most local release questions start at the Metropolitan Detention Center. MDC runs the only adult county jail in Bernalillo County. The MDC custody portal hosts three public lists: the Inmate Custody List for people still inside, the Inmate Release List for people let out in the past two weeks, and the Arrest List for new bookings. A user must accept the disclaimer first, then run a name or booking-number search.
If the person was sent to state prison after sentencing, the next stop is the New Mexico Corrections Department. NMCD keeps its own offender search and updates the prison side nightly. If the case was federal, the search moves to the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator. For some quick checks, a phone call works better than a search. MDC general inmate information runs through 505-839-8700.
- Open the MDC custody portal and accept the terms.
- Try the Inmate Release List for releases in the last two weeks.
- Search by last name, first name, person ID, or booking number.
- If the case ended in a state prison sentence, run the NMCD offender search.
- If the case was federal, run the BOP inmate locator.
- Call MDC at 505-839-8700 if the online status is unclear.
Sample release types on MDC booking detail pages give a sense of what the public list reflects. Observed labels include ROR (Release on Recognizance), Release to DOC, Case(s) Consolidated, Other - See Comments, and Third Party. A blank release field on a booking detail page means the hold is still active and the person is still in custody.
The MDC Release List
The MDC Release List is the first place to confirm a Bernalillo County release. Indexed official snippets say the list shows inmates released within the past two weeks. The same portal also drives the live Custody List and the Arrest List. The custody site notes that the data is for reference only and that commercial use is barred. Bernalillo County says users alone are responsible for confirming any data they find there.
Each booking detail page on the custody portal shows a Bail Details table with Release Type and Release Date columns. That is where the actual release reason posts. A booking record also shows the Person ID, Booking number in YY-NNNNN format, Admission Date, Active Holds flag, Housing unit when in custody, Arrests, Charges, Warrants, and Bail Details. Reading the Bail Details row tells the user whether the person bonded out, went to DOC, or left under a third-party agreement.
Mention of the MDC list as the starting Bernalillo County released inmate search tool is fair: the page covers the past two weeks of releases, refreshes regularly, and is the only public county source. A recent release that does not appear on the list usually means the person is still inside, or the release window has rolled past the two-week mark.
Note: The MDC Release List only covers the past two weeks; older Bernalillo County releases require a call to MDC or a check of the relevant court case file.
Setting Up Release Notifications
VINE is the free national notification system that tracks custody changes. New Mexico runs a state VINE service through the Corrections Department. The official NMCD VINE page describes the service for victims and families. NMCD's victim services brochure lists the toll-free VINE number as 1-877-VICTIM4 (1-877-842-8464). A registered user can sign up by phone or by the VINELink website.
VINE sends a phone call, text, or email when an offender is released, transferred, escapes, or dies in custody. Registration is anonymous. NMCD also tells victims of violent crime that they must register directly with the prosecuting District Attorney's Office to receive written notice of Adult Parole Board hearings and NMCD releases. VINE alerts and DA office notifications work side by side, not as substitutes.
We have seen the VINE image source linked through the NMCD victim services page.
The NMCD page sets out who VINE is for and how to register, and it is the official anchor for any Bernalillo County released inmate alert setup.
Searching State Released Inmates
People sentenced to state prison move from MDC to NMCD custody. The NMCD offender search and the dedicated search.cd.nm.gov portal both run public lookups. NMCD says Adult Prison Division information is updated nightly. Probation and Parole information is updated in real time. The agency also tells the public to contact the institution or the probation and parole office to verify location or legal status because offenders move.
Central Office, Constituent Services, and the Records Bureau will not provide release updates by phone. NMCD Inmate Records can be reached at 505-690-9790. Probation and Parole is at 866-416-9867. A user looking for a Bernalillo County released inmate who was sent to state prison should run the offender search first, then call the unit listed on the result if more detail is needed.

The NMCD form mixes name fields, an Offender Number field, and a status filter so the user can include or exclude inactive records.
| Field | Type | Required | Notes / Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | One of Last Name, First Name, or Offender Number | Page asks for one of these three. |
| First Name | Text | One of three | Partial entries allowed. |
| Offender Number | Text | One of three | NMCD number. |
| Offender Status | Radio | Optional | Active; Include Inactive; Absconder Only. |
| Select Region | Dropdown | Optional | All Regions, Region I, Region II, Region III, Region IV. |
| Age From | Number | Optional | Lower bound on age range. |
| Age To | Number | Optional | Upper bound on age range. |
| reCAPTCHA | Captcha | Required | Must verify not a robot. |
| Search | Button | n/a | Runs the search. |
| Clear | Button | n/a | Clears the form. |
An Absconder Only search can be run without name input. That option is useful when looking for someone who walked away from parole rather than someone who served full time.
Searching Federal Released Inmates
Federal cases out of Bernalillo County run through the U.S. District Court for New Mexico and then, if the person is sentenced to prison, through the Bureau of Prisons. The BOP inmate locator is the public tool. BOP warns that a result showing "Released" or "Not in BOP Custody" does not always mean the person is free. The person may be in another custody system, such as a halfway house, a state facility, or a local jail.
The locator offers two search modes. Find By Number searches by BOP Register Number, DCDC Number, FBI Number, or INS Number. Find By Name searches by First, Middle, Last, Race, Age, and Sex. BOP marks First and Last as required in the name tab.
| Field | Type | Required | Notes / Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find By Number tab | Tab | Optional | Search by federal ID. |
| Type of Number | Radio | Required in number tab | BOP Register; DCDC; FBI; INS. |
| Number | Text | Required in number tab | BOP Register format #####-###. |
| Find By Name tab | Tab | Optional | Search by personal info. |
| First | Text | Required in name tab | First name. |
| Middle | Text | Optional | Middle name. |
| Last | Text | Required in name tab | Last name. |
| Race | Selection | Optional | American Indian, Asian, Black, White. |
| Age | Number | Optional | Filter by age. |
| Sex | Selection | Optional | Male, Female. |
| Search | Button | n/a | Runs the locator. |
| Clear Form | Button | n/a | Resets the form. |
A BOP result row gives the inmate's snapshot at a glance.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | Last, First; the registered legal name on file. |
| Register # | BOP register number in #####-### format. |
| Age | Current age. |
| Race | BOP race coding. |
| Sex | Male or Female. |
| Release Date | Actual or projected release date; may show released-status text. |
| Location | Facility, halfway house, or a status note when no facility applies. |
The Location field is the field to watch. A blank, "Released," or "Not in BOP Custody" line is the prompt to check state and county systems next.
Verifying Release in Person or by Phone
Online lookups have lag. The MDC custody portal refreshes during the day but does not promise a live feed. NMCD says the public should call the institution or the probation/parole office to confirm. BOP says the same thing in different words. A phone call to the holding facility settles most release questions in one step.
For Bernalillo County MDC, the general inmate information line is 505-839-8700. For NMCD prison records, the central Inmate Records line is 505-690-9790. For state parole and probation, the agency line is 866-416-9867.

An in-person visit to the issuing court can also confirm release. The court file shows the release order, any conditions, and the date it took effect. For a Bernalillo District Court case, the file lives with the Second Judicial District Clerk. For a Metro Court case, the file is with the Metro Court Records Custodian.
The New Mexico Sex Offender Registry
The Sex Offender Registry is a separate track from MDC, NMCD, and BOP. The New Mexico Department of Public Safety Law Enforcement Records Bureau (DPS LERB) operates the registry. The bureau hosts the OffenderWatch system, which county sheriff's offices use to enter registrations. OffenderWatch generates the public website and is also the path into the federal NCIC system.
County sheriff SOR units register convicted sex offenders and check that they stay in compliance. DPS notes that only certain publishable offenders show on the public site. Not every registered person is publishable. Members of the public can register on the site for email alerts when an offender moves into a neighborhood. The DPS Sex Offender Registry contact email is dps.sorna@dps.nm.gov, and the phone is 505-476-2444.
For Bernalillo County released inmates with a sex offense in their record, the registry is the most current and most reliable place to verify a current address. The MDC release list will show that the person left county custody. The registry will show whether the person registered after release and where they registered. Both checks are useful together. More on the bureau lives on the DPS LERB page.
Parole and Probation Information
Not every release ends in true freedom. Many Bernalillo County released inmates leave custody on parole or probation. Parole follows a state prison sentence and is set by the Adult Parole Board. Probation usually follows a suspended or deferred sentence in District Court or Metro Court. NMCD Probation and Parole supervises both groups in the county.
NMCD says probation and parole information is updated in real time on its offender search. A user who runs the search and sees an active supervision status can read the assigned officer's region, the supervision type, and any special conditions on the result. The agency line for Probation and Parole is 866-416-9867. Victims of violent crime should register with the prosecuting District Attorney's Office for written notice of Adult Parole Board hearings.
The Second Judicial District Attorney is the prosecuting agency for Bernalillo County felony cases. The DA's victim services unit handles parole hearing notice for victims of violent crime convicted out of the Second Judicial District.
Reentry Resources in Bernalillo County
Reentry support is split across state, county, and nonprofit channels. NMCD Family and Constituent Services handles family-side questions. The agency's email for that role is CDFamilySrvcs@state.nm.us, and the general inquiries inbox is NMCD-Inquires@state.nm.us. NMCD Victim Services can be reached at cdvictimsrvcs@cd.nm.gov.
Legal needs after release often involve the Law Offices of the Public Defender. LOPD has an Albuquerque office that covers post-release issues for indigent clients. New Mexico Legal Aid, the State Bar of New Mexico, and the courts' self-help resources handle expungement, driver's license restoration, family-law, housing, and benefits issues. The LOPD Albuquerque office page lists current contact details.
- NMCD Family/Constituent Services: CDFamilySrvcs@state.nm.us
- NMCD general inquiries: NMCD-Inquires@state.nm.us
- NMCD Victim Services: cdvictimsrvcs@cd.nm.gov
- LOPD Albuquerque office for post-release criminal matters
- New Mexico Legal Aid for civil legal aid
- State Bar of New Mexico lawyer referral
For arrest record cleanup, the DPS expungements page hosts the state's official expungement guidance. The Criminal Record Expungement Act took effect January 1, 2020.
Comparing County, State, and Federal Custody
Three custody systems show up in any full Bernalillo County released inmate search. The right next step depends on which system held the person last. The table below sets out where to search, how often the data updates, and who to call.
| Track | Where to Search | Update Schedule | Who to Call |
|---|---|---|---|
| County Jail (MDC) | viaintfacep2.bernco.gov/custodylist | Custody and release lists refresh during the day; release list shows two-week window. | MDC 505-839-8700 |
| State Prison (NMCD) | search.cd.nm.gov | Adult Prison nightly; Probation/Parole real time. | NMCD Inmate Records 505-690-9790; Probation/Parole 866-416-9867 |
| Federal (BOP) | bop.gov/inmateloc | BOP locator refreshes as records change; release status may lag. | BOP facility listed on the locator result |
A user who is not sure which track to start with should check MDC first because most local cases pass through it. If MDC shows no recent record, the next stop is NMCD. If NMCD shows nothing, the case may have been federal, and BOP is next.
Civil Rights Restoration After Release
Release from custody does not always restore every civil right at once. New Mexico has its own rules for voting rights, firearm rights, and driver's license reinstatement. Eligibility depends on the offense, the sentence, and the status of any parole or probation. The Criminal Record Expungement Act gives a separate path to remove certain arrest and public records from public view through a court petition.
For Bernalillo County released inmates who want to clear an old case, the expungement filing goes to the court that handled it. The Second Judicial District Civil Division at 400 Lomas Blvd NW in Albuquerque handles District Court expungement filings. The DPS Law Enforcement Records Bureau page describes the broader expungement framework, including which records may be expunged and which are excluded. Sex offenses and other serious violent offenses sit outside the act's reach.
Note: Civil-rights restoration rules change with new legislation; verify current status with NMCD, DPS, the issuing court, or a New Mexico licensed attorney before filing anything.
